Here piggy piggy piggy! The Great Rib Cook Off: Apex Employee Morale Event

Written by: Seth Stell

It’s that time of the year! Yes, the Rib Cook-off returned to Reno/Sparks, NV for another great festival filled with Rib recipes from all around the world. “The 22nd annual “Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off” is one of the largest rib festivals in the United States. Every year the Labor Day holiday at Victorian Square in downtown Sparks, is transformed into a BBQ heaven. The rib cook off isn’t only about the ribs, but also includes free concerts (Gin Blossoms and Asia among the 80s faves this year) plus local music and many craft booths.

I’m a huge fan of ribs but our President, Kurt, puts my love for porky goodness to the test. So for the third year running, Kurt hosted a morale event at the rib cook-off for Apex employees to enjoy.

The day began with a private patio reserved at the Great Basin Brewery where we ordered appetizers and beverages to complement our upcoming personal rib selections. Once the entire Apex team arrived, Kurt distributed an allowance to the staff so we could purchase our individual rib selections and try out the various rib purveyors. We all embarked on our quest to discover the best ribs at the festival. Many of the Apex staff members fell victim to the first available rib booths they walked by, but I was not fooled and continued to march deeper into the festival of rib bliss with co-worker Lynn Henderson by my side!

Once we returned from our rib conquest, our private patio was packed with co-workers and various selections of ribs from multiple vendors. Some of the ribs were prepared with dry rubs and others were served swimming in sauce. At any rate, my co-workers and I dove into our selections. There were definitely NOT enough wet naps to keep our fingers and faces from suffering the saucy rib carnage, but we all pressed on.

Of course after heavy deliberation we couldn’t decide on our favorite rib vendor, but we all agreed that the AUSSOM AUSSIES had the most tender ribs by far. Those Aussie’s took “falling off the bone” to a whole new level.

If you’re ever anywhere near Reno, NV during the Labor Day holiday weekend, you really can’t miss “The Best in the West Rib Cook-off”. You will not be disappointed.
