Mid-Winter fishing in the Truckee River
Written by: Seth Stell
This weekend I went fishing for the first time in almost two months. Fishing was my first love growing up and has remained an active hobby in my adult life. Typically during the spring and summer, you can find me on the Truckee River either before or immediately after the work day. Between the holiday travels and the typical Reno winter conditions, there haven’t been too many opportunities to drop a line in the water, but Sunday (January, 16, 2011) would change all that!
Around 3:30 pm I put on my waders, grabbed my Light Action rod /reel combo, and ventured down to my “honey hole” located in the Idlewild neighborhood of the Truckee River in downtown Reno. The sky was partly cloudy, and the temperature was a surprising 57 degrees, which is not normal for Reno in January. Once I reached my spot, I could feel it was going to be a great day. As an experienced fisherman, I can sometimes feel the fish eager for the bite. Sunday proved to be a great day to start the 2011 fishing season. By way of my first cast, I quickly set the hook into a large Rainbow Trout which sent me on a wild ride. At this point, the fishing frenzy began.
After landing my first Rainbow Trout of 2011, I proceeded to catch four more of comparable size in the two hours following. Though I ended my day by breaking the line on yet another monster Rainbow Trout, all-in-all it was the best day I’ve ever started a fishing season! 2011 is already ready shaping up to be a year to remember.
